Dear Readers~
Here's my latest #tbt blog covering the finals of the 2018 AVP San Francisco open back in early July of 2018. Now it's time to begin covering the event.
July 8, 2018 had the final day of the San Francisco AVP Open. That day held the men's and women's finals. The men's finals had Chase Buddinger and Sean Rosenthal against Ed Ratledge and Roberto "Rafu" Rodriguez for the men's side while Emily Day and Betsi Flint played against Geena Urango and Caitlin Ledoux for the women's side.
For the women's final, the number 1 seat, Betsi Flint and Emily Day were trying to go for their second straight AVP Championship after previously winning in Seattle in late June. Their opponents were Geena Urango and Caitlin Ledoux, ranked at number 4. The first set was won by Day and Flint with a final score of 21-17. The second set went to Urango and Ledoux with the pair winning 21-16. With the score being tied at one set each, a third set happened. That set ended at 15-7 with Day and Flint winning. The pair also won their second championship of the 2018 AVP tour as well as winning back to back. The only other time during the 2018 tour where this happened was in early June where Nick Lucena and Phil Dalhausser won the men's event in Austin and New York, the first two stops of the tour.
On the men's side, the finalists were 2008 and 2012 Olympian, Sean Rosenthal, and former NBA player, Chase Buddinger, up against Ed Ratledge and Rafu Rodriguez, both of whom have been playing in the AVP for over a decade. The first set of the men's finals went in favor of Ratledge and Rodriguez with a final score of 21-14. The second set was closer ending at 21-18 with Ratledge and Rodriguez winning the second set. After winning the second set, the pair won their first AVP championships in their careers.
it was a pretty exciting final day with not only having back to back champions but also having a pair winning their first championships after playing for over a decade.
Don't forget to tune in on Amazon prime this weekend for the 2019 AVP Seattle open to see if Emily Day and Betsi Flint can win Seattle 2 years in a row and also to see if the 2018 Seattle winners, Taylor Crabb and Jake Gibb, can do the same.
