#TBT to AVP MBO 2018: Day 1

My latest #TBT blog covers Day 1 of the 2018 AVP Manhattan Beach Open so I hope you enjoy!

August 17, 2018 was Day 1 of the 2018 AVP Gold Series stop #2, Manhattan Beach, in the LA metro near Hermosa Beach, California.

There were a few teams to watch out for. Each team listed played 3 games on Day 1. Those teams are (in no certain order):
Emily Day/Betsi Flint (2)
Casey Patterson/Stafford Slick (5)
Alix Klineman/ April Ross (3)
Geena Urango/ Allie Wheeler (9)
Laura Dykstra/ Sheila Shaw (14)
Taylor Crabb/ Jake Gibb (3)
Sean Rosenthal/Chase Budinger (8)

Emily Day and Betsi Flint played their 3 games at 8:10, 11:30, and 2:40. Their 8:10 game was against Juliana Friedrich and Danielle Jacobson, the winners of the AVP Next Northwest division . The game ended 21-12 and 21-11 in favor of Day and Flint . Their game at 11:30 was against Falyn Fonoimoana  and Priscillia Piantadosi-Lima. The game ended 21-18 and 22-20 with Day and Flint winning both sets. Their 2:40 game was against Howard and Reeves. The 2:40 game was a 3 set game. The first set was won at 21-14 but they lost the second at 18-21 so they had a third set. The third set ended 16-14 in favor of Day and Flint. After winning, Day and Flint played Klineman and Ross on Day 2 at 1:45.

Casey Patterson and Stafford Slick played their 3 games at 11:20, 1:40, and 4:50. Their first game at 11:20 was against James Ka and Nemanja Komar, the winners of the AVP Next Hawaii division. That game ended 21-11 and 21-12. The game at 1:40 was against Piotr Marciniak and Eric Zaun. The first set ended 21-18 in favor of Patterson and Slick but lost the second set 18-21. They made up for it by winning the third set 15-10. Their third game of the day was at 4:50 against Michael Brunsting and Ty Loomis. Patterson and Slick would go on to win that game 21-11 and 21-16.  the pair would later go on to play Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena at 12:40 on Day 2.

Alix Klineman and April Ross played their 3 games at 9:15, 12:35, and 3:50. The 9:15 game against Annika and Teegan Van Gunst , winners of the AVP Next Southeast division. The game ended 21-16 and 21-13 in favor of Klineman and Ross. The 12:35 game was against Tory Paranagua and Jace Pardon. Klineman and Ross won the game 21-15 and 21-13. The game at 3:50 was against Janelle Allen and Kerri Schuh. Klineman and Ross would go on to win that game 21-17 and 21-14. The pair would later go on to play Emily Day and Bets Flint at 1:45 on Day 2.

Geena Urango and Allie Wheeler played their 3 games at 11:20, 1:35, and 4:50. The results of the 11:20 game against Megan Manarri and Taylor Nuquist, winners of the AVP Next South division, ended 21-19 and 21-13 in favor of Urango and Wheeler. The 1:35 game against Cook and Spielder was a 3 set match. The first set ended 21-17 in favor of Urango and Wheeler while the second set went in favor of Cook and Spielder with a final score of 21-17. The two teams had a third set to decide the winner. The third set ended 15-7 in favor of Urango and Wheeler. Their third game was at 4:50 against Kelly Claes and Brittany Hochevar. Unfortunatly for Urango and Wheeler, the lost 19-21 in the first set and 9-21 in the second set. After losing, the pair got moved to the contender's bracket for their next game. That game was against Allison McColloch and Kendra VanZwieten at 11:35 on Day 2.

Laura Dykstra and Sheila Shaw played their 3 games at 9:10, 2:40, and 4:50. Their first game at 9:10 was against Tory Paraguana and Jace Pardon. The pair lost the first set 18-21 but were able to come back and win the second set 21-11 but would later go on to lose the third set 13-15 and having Paraguana and Pardon move on while Dykstra and Shaw move to the contender's bracket. After their tough loss against Paraguana and Pardon, Dykstra and Shaw had their next match at 2:40 against the previously mentioned, Annika and Teegan Van Gunst. The game ended with Dykstra and Shaw winning 21-19 and 21-16. The pair's next game was at 4:50 against Corinne Quiggle and Kimberly Smith. Unfortunately for Dykstra and Shaw, they lost both sets 18-21 and 19-21 to eventually end their dreams of getting their name on the Manhattan Beach Pier after finishing on Day 1 and not getting a Day 2.

Taylor Crabb and Jake Gibb played their 3 games at 9:15, 12:25, and 3:45. Their first game at 9:15 was against Paul Araiza and his partner, Olympic Gold medalist, David Lee. Crabb and Gibb would go on to win both sets 21-12 and 21-13. Their next game at 12:25 was against Mark Burik and Ian Satterfield. Crabb and Gibb won that game 21-12 and 21-19. Their game at 3:45 was against Jeremy Casebeer and Olympic Gold medalist, Reid Priddy. Crabb and Gibb would later go on to win both sets 21-18 and 21-16. Crabb and Gibb would later go on to play Theo Brunner and John Hyden at 2:50 on Day 2.

Sean Rosenthal and Chase Budinger played their 3 games at 10:20, 12:30, and 4:50. Their first game at 10:20 was against Michael Boag and Bobby Jacobs. Rosenthal and Budinger won 21-14 and 22-20. Their game at 12:30 was against Avery Drost and John Mayer. Both teams played 3 really good sets but Budinger and Rosenthal would go on to lose the game 22-20 17-21, and 15-17. That lose moved the pair into the contender's bracket. Their game at 4:50 was against Bruno Amorim and Skylar del Sol. Budinger and Rosenthal would lose the first set 18-21 but would come back and win the second set with 21-17 and the third set at 15-10. The pair would go on to play Chase's Brother, Duncan Budinger and his partner Daniel Dalanhese at 8:15 on Day 2.

That concludes the Day 1 summary of some of the teams and stay tuned for the results of Day 2.
